New challenges pop up on TikTok every day, but every now and again, one emerges that completely takes over the internet.

Some of the most popular ones this year have been Sea Shanties, the Silhouette Challenge and the Centre of Gravity trend, and now there’s a new one to add to the mix.

It’s called the Milk Crate Challenge, and videos with the hashtag #cratechallenge have already had over 67 million views in total.

So, what is the Crate Challenge? And who started it? Here’s everything you need to know.

The viral Crate Challenge involves stacking up milk crates and walking over them. Sounds easy, right? Well it’s really not.

If you’re not familiar, milk crates are plastic interlocking boxes that are used to transport milk from dairies to retailers.

People are stacking them up towers of up to eight boxes and walking up and down them like stairs.

However, the crates aren’t very stable, which makes the challenge really hard to do without falling.

According to Know Your Meme, the challenge is actually based on a video that went viral a decade ago.

In the clip posted by the YouTube channel JoyRidersTV Bonus Footy on June 23rd 2011, a guy runs across a staircase made of milk crates before falling and injuring his back.

This clip appears to have inspired Facebook users Kenneth Waddell and Jordan Browne who were the first known people to do the Milk Crate Challenge in August 2021.

They posted a video of people playing the crate game in a public park on Facebook which went viral and was then copied by thousands of people around the world.

The Crate Challenge has been slammed by internet users as it is incredibly dangerous.

Milk crates are usually made of polythene, which is perfect for transporting milk, but not so great for standing on.

Whilst the plastic might seem pretty sturdy, it can’t hold someone’s body weight, which is a serious issue when people are trying to walk on them.

The flimsy material combined with the wobbly towers lead most people to fall from a great height, which can result in serious injury.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr Shawn Anthony told The Today Show: The Milk Crate Challenge is very dangerous, and we are seeing many orthopedic injuries as a result of the falls.”

“Injuries can include broken wrists, shoulder dislocations, ACL and meniscus tears, as well as life-threatening conditions like spinal cord injuries,” he continued.
